Several living authors today are developing media theory in very promising directions. Sherry Turkle, Douglas Rushkoff, Chris Hedges and several others are chronicling the co-evolution of social media and human psychology. To me, much of their work reveals the renewed relevance of two prophets of the media paradigm we now inhabit. The two deceased prophets — Marshall McLuhan and Terence McKenna — understood the deep inter-penetration of media models and the human psyche. McKenna and McLuhan both enjoyed a loyal following during their lives, but the full relevance of their work is only becoming apparent now that the evolution of media is reaching its hyper-speed.
