The Ultimate Freedom: Shaking Hands With Death (From the Royal College of Physicians)
Thank you for your work, Sir Terry. What you’ve done on the issue of assisted dying will echo in Eternity. I appropriated this elegantly exultant phrase from the movie Gladiator. Just as Maximus Decimus Meridius, you’re fighting with honor and uncommon grace. You’re fighting for our ultimate freedom. Influenced in part by your work, I feel strongly that the continued existence of taboos around death and dying represents a spiritual crisis fueled by spiritual anachronisms. You are continuing a noble tradition that will inevitably de-materialize the falsehoods that rob us of the opportunity not only to die with dignity, but also to live with joy.
