Unplug! The Wisdom of Mindful Data Consumption

I wholeheartedly agree with Goleman. Our pathologically tight bond with digital devices is tearing us apart from each other. We need a new culture, a new set of shared expectations. We can cultivate this new culture by taking easy steps toward a healthier device etiquette:

  1. No phones at the dinner table.
  2. No phones during sex.
  3. Set aside tech-free time every day.
  4. Don’t email colleagues after 6 pm.

Let’s understand that, just as technology can improve our lives, it can also diminish our lives if we let it. Let’s not underestimate the threat of data overload in our personal lives. It can rob us of intimacy and humanity. It already has. We now need to reclaim these lost treasures as essential pillars of life. As long as we remain addicted to distraction, we remain hollow at the core.
